26th May 2021 - Health Certificate from vet (which was obtained to delay desexing till mature)

7th June 2021 - Deceased - eutanised at emergency vet after developing symtoms that suggested some type of toxin. Started after a visit to a dog park on a Thursday and he was gone on the Monday (more info below). However it is important to note he was attacked by another dog and nerve damage can't be ruled out.

Thursday 3rd June 2021 - "Lucky was bitten by border collie cross at an off lead dog area. The other dog bit him on the neck for a short time but he was pretty shaken up by it. I was right next to him at the time and it came out of nowhere. "

3rd or 4th? June 2021 - Taken to vet who advised there was no physical injury. "But he's emotionally traumatised, burying his food, weeing inside and vomiting what he eats up. The vet prescribed Prozac"

6th June 2021 - Worse today and I'm pretty worried about him. He's panting, shaking, unable to use his dog door or walk on the tiles to get outside through the sliding door. He's only eating those liver snacks and even shakes while he is eating." "Tremors and darting eyes"

6th June - Given Trazodone at 7am and Prozac at 3.30 (5th June), another Trazodone at 3pm Friday (4th June) "but that didn't seem to affect him" Weighs about 17kgs and he had 50mg trazodone.

He can't even seem to lie down and sleep. His eyes are darting all over the place

Jun 6, 2021, 11:37 PM - "I've admitted Lucky (Emergency Vet Clinic) so hopefully we will get some answers. They said his shaking was definitely not behavioural and not even likely due to the prozac so there is something else going on."

"Initial blood tests are normal" "They have sedated him, given him fluids and some anti tremor meds which has calmed him down a bit. She said it could be some kind of toxicity issue like he's eaten something dodgy"

7th June 2021 - Given sleep - No further tests performed, No autopsy performed. Symptoms indicative of some sort of toxicity.

Note: I was able to get permission from his owner to have his remains cremated and I have his ashes here now :(

Updated June 2021 - Sadly Varg was put to sleep on the 7th May 2021. He had cancer of his spleen and kidney and could no longer eat.

Update May 23rd 2022
1 1/2 weeks prior, her owner took her to the vet because her 2nd eyelid had come across her eyes about 1/3 of the way - then fixed itself. Owner had also noticed that she wasn't opening her mouth much and that she was lethargic.
Vet examined her and kept her for the day giving her Buprelieve to ease pain in case the jaw was dislocated or some other mechanical issue. She sent her home on 20 mg prednisone for 3-5 days in case it ws a neurological issue. Her mouth opens a bit more.
Today (23rd May) owner took her for her monthly massage. the therapist gave her laser treatment and it helped with the jaw a bit more. But her eyes have sunk in and her muscle around her head has atrophied. She is happy in herself. The vet said to keep her on the prednisone as prescribed.

Update 24th May 2022 - Diagnosis is Masticatory Muscle Myositis or MMM

Update 24th June 2022
After 4 weeks on 20mg per day of prednisone Quinta is stable with full chewing & mouth opening. Lowered the dose to 10 mg per day and still seems stable. Her eyes are less sunken, almost normal. Muscle atrophy in top of head and cheeks no change. She's happy, runs around a bit in the back yard, even enjoying chewing bones. She's having cold laser treatment once a week around her jaw and head.

Hips & Elbows xrayed again at 2.1/2yrs (so Elbows could be given a score)

Tested for addisons (negative result)

Sienna given Alizin (mismating medication) 27th & 28th June 2009, it did not terminate the pregnancy and I believe the pups were adversly affected, they had eye infections at birth and spent the first few days at the vets.

Has since been prescribed Phenobarbatone (2mg a day per body weight) lowest dose for her weight.

Updared 30/04/2020 - At 5 years old, diagnosed with liver disease (described by vet as born without proper blood flow to liver), died 5th April 2019, epilepsy medication changed but it then ulcerated her oesophagus causing a lot of pain

Has since had periods of tonic clonic seizures a week apart

Update August 2019 - Lionel's epilepsy has been managed with the minimum therapeutic dosage of Phenomav for the past seven years. 50mg Phenomav morning and night. Bloods indicate no effect on kidneys or liver, so far. Still has the odd random mild seizure, but nowhere near as severe or frequent as prior to medication. Teeth are worn, but kept clean with dried kangaroo tendons. Has arthritis, but this is relieved with 4cyte and lame episodes respond to two or three days of metacam liquid. Weight is ideal for such a big boy - 30.5 kg.

Note: has produced a daughter that seizures - Lumineux Blue Diamond - Diamond has had at least 5 seizures in the last 6 months, the triggers have been over excitement, over exercising & stress, but she has had at least two whilst at rest - I would describe them as Grand Mal.
So we believe the above mentioned seizures are epilepsy

So we now believe the above mentioned seizures are epilepsy and the triggers, like his daughter appear to be heat, over excitement, stress.

From Late 2012 a number of courses of RILEXINE® for anal gland infections (not sac or blockaage) most likely related to immune system)

27th March 2013 - back and hips x-rayed again, Spondylosis in back, cortisone injections in back for severe nerve/back pain and started on Symmetrel (Amantadine) for pain.

1st April 2013 just before 8pm Seizure lasting approx 15 mins, frothing at mouth, no loss of bodily functions, drank 2 big bowls of water afterwards. After effects - Motor skills/balance affected and mental confusion, eyes bloodshot.
Magic was examined by a lovely A/H vet, blood taken but test results showed nothing other than a slightly low renal function
Possibilities - brain tumor, side affects of new mediaction started 4 days earlier (amamantadine)

2nd April 2013 - 3.05pm seizure lasting approx 3 mins

3rd April 8.45am examined by his treating vet, Magic was not in a good way and the decision was made by us all to give him sleep :(

I am resigned to the fact that I will never know if what happened was due to a brain tumor or the known side affects of this medication either on it's own, or in comjunction with the imuran Magic had to have every day (imuran was the only other medication he was on at the time).
For anyone reading this who came to this page searching for information on amantadine use in dogs - I say to you Think Very Carefully and do your research before allowing this to be given to your dog.
