At 8 weeks of age Vicki was accepted by Seeing Eye Dogs Australia as a future candidate to be trained as a Seeing Eye Dog. She (along with her littermates) was professionally tested at just under 8 weeks of age at which time she showed a lot of potential. Currently living with foster parents, Vicki has had basic training and lots of socialising and will shortly begin her formal training - we hope that she is succesful and can help make a sight impaired persons life a little easier.
June '03 - Vicki is now in serious training at the Seeing Eye Dog School and we are told she is doing very well.
Nov 2003 - Vicki has completed her training and is a fully trained Seeing Eye Dog, she is waiting to be matched to a sight impaired person.
2004 - Vicki has Graduated and been matched with her new handler and is now a Seeing Eye Dog!
Update May 2004 - We are very proud of Vicki who, we were informed, hauled her handler out of the path of a truck!
April 2006 - Vicki has retired from duty early - through no fault of her own. The result of being attacked quite badly by another dog on more than one occasion whilst working with her sight impaired charge. Unfortunately when encountering other dogs while in harness Vicki was too distracted to perform her duty properly. What a waste of a good dog and another tragedy caused by irresponsible owners letting their dogs run loose.
August
2006 - Whilst Vicki settled in well here, made friends with our
gang and coped well with us not being here through the day
(because of work), I felt she was deserving of more - a home
where she could be with human companionship more throughout the
day. Vicki now lives with some lovely people who have become good
friends, they have one of our boys - Darcy (Lumineux
Starrblazer), so she now has a four footed playmate - not to
mention the cats - and is able to go to work with Darcy and her
owners a couple of days a week as well.
